Year: 2013 | Country: South Africa | Client: EUD South Africa
  • Worked with IBF, a company based in Belgium.

The interim evaluation of Erasmus Mundus was concerned with the evaluation of the Erasmus Mundus programme action 2 as it was implemented in South Africa.

The company conducted a survey, literature study and the reporting on the project. Recommendations involved joint degrees and Curriculum Development and financial management.

The Erasmus Mundus Programme 2009 - 2013 was a co-operation and mobility programme in the field of higher education that aimed to enhance the quality of European higher education and to promote dialogue and understanding between people and cultures through cooperation with third countries. In addition, it was meant to contribute to the development of human resources and the international cooperation capacity of Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) in third countries by increasing mobility between the European Union (EU) and these countries.

Overall objectives

The overall objectives of Erasmus Mundus Partnerships between South African and European HEIs were to contribute to the provision of appropriate high-level skills for sustainable development and growth in South Africa (SA), and to improve political, economic and cultural links between South Africa and the European Union. The programme was strongly supported by South Africa's Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET) and Higher Education South Africa (HESA), the representative body of the Vice-Chancellors of the 23 public HEIs in SA.

The global objective of this interim evaluation was to provide decision makers in the South African Government and the European Commission with sufficient information to make an informed judgement about the past performance of the programme, to document lessons learned and to provide practical recommendations for follow-up and future action.
